Introduction

CNI SBHS was on the peak and again it will be on the peak by the grace of God and blessings. Thanks to all the late and former Officers and Colleagues of CNI SBHS. This was a teamwork and not an individual's contribution.

Church of North India (CNI) , The Synodical Board of Health Services (SBHS) is promoting and carrying out appropriate medical services and training, AIDS awareness programme, Community Health Work and the diffusion of useful medical knowledge in the spirit of service and sacrifice for the benefit of all people irrespective of caste, creed, community or nationality. The SBHS covers the whole of India except the four southern States. It constitutes the largest network of health care institutions in India with 60 hospitals and several health related programmes that are functioning through the eight Regional Boards of Health Services. 

CNI SBHS is associated with the Christian Medical Colleges and Hospitals- Vellore and Ludhiana.

  • Introduction and implementation of several health programmes and projects on HIV/AIDS, Community Health and Nursing particularly for the vulnerable and marginalized community at the grassroots.  The programmes funded by Christian Aid, EED Germany, DANIDA (Danish Embassy), The Presbyterian Church in United States of America (PCUSA), Presbyterian Church in Canada (PCC), Presbyterian World Service & Development, Canada (PWS&D), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), International Christian AIDS Network (ICAN), Netherlands, The United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG), Church of Scotland, Council of World Mission (CWM), Global Ministries United Church of Christ (UCC) and other partner churches and agencies across the globe has helped in community development and upliftment of the marginalized and underprivileged community in different parts of India. Number of programmes have been conducted in networking with organizations such as State AIDS Control Societies-Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, Christian Medical Association of India, Bible Society of India and with various government, non-government, Faith Based and Community Based Organizations.  
    • Introduction of several health related programmes functioning under 60 hospitals, 22 Schools of Nursing and 8 Regional Health Boards of CNI SBHS. Thereafter, Coordinators for AIDS, Community and Nursing programmes were also appointed at the CNI SBHS office, New Delhi. The former Coordinator Community Health Programme was sent to Israel to attend a training programme. The former Coordinator, AIDS programme was sent to Thailand, South Africa, Geneva, Sri Lanka, and Mexico with frequent visits to Canada to attend conferences and programmes.  Similarly the Project Officers were sent to Canada and South Africa, Mexico and London to attend conferences on health issues.  All these visits were made possible through the funds of CNI SBHS approved by Dr. Samuel Kishan, Chief Functionary and Secretary, CNI SBHS and SBHS.
    • New Office of Administration and Programmes of The Synodical Board of Health Services, Church of North India was inaugurated in 2004 at CNI Bhawan, New Delhi.
    • Projects such as ‘Sahayata’ and ‘Nirmal’ focused on raising awareness and provided vital and quality information about HIV/AIDS and related issues among the vulnerable groups in different parts of India.  These projects also provided testing, counseling, care and treatment facilities to the people infected and affected with HIV/AIDS.   Project 'Sahayata' was implemented in five states namely, Assam, Orissa, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh.  The objective of this project was to empower communities to deal with the HIV/AIDS pandemic in a more comprehensive and  systematic way.  It aimed at increasing awareness, motivating people to take preventive measures, providing testing and counseling facilities for those affected, and persuading communities to support affected individuals and their families. Project 'Nirmal' (functional in 54 villages among the the Banchhara Community ) was implemented in Central India (Madhya Pradesh) and focused to increase awareness on issues such as HIV/AIDS among the targeted vulnerable groups such as truck drivers and commercial sex workers. 
    • The Community Health Project (functional in 124 villages of  Ratlam, Badwani, Jobat, Mendha and Hatpiplia in Madhya Pradesh, Central India) has reached out to the most vulnerable community at the grass roots with main focus on women and children in central India. The primary focus of this project is to enable the downtrodden community to become aware on various issues related to mother and child health, pulse polio immunization, means of livelihood, literacy, substance abuse, malaria, tuberculosis and other health related issues. Self Help Groups are in progress and various income generation programmes are bringing results. 10 Microprojects  of the Community Health programme were supported by EED, Germany and 2 were supported by the Presbyterian Church in Canada. These were implemented in States such as West Bengal, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, Chattisgarh and Maharashtra.  This project focused on the upliftment of health and economic status of the rural marginalized population of India.
    • Workshops on Behaviour Change and Communication (BCC), HIV/AIDS awareness and related issues were conducted in all the 26 dioceses of the Church of North India. These programmes and projects were mainly focused to strengthen community capacity, improve health status of the deprived community and provide sources for financial sustainability through various income generation programmes and schemes.
    •  Workshops, seminars, panel discussions, trainings have been conducted for church leaders, medical and para-medical staff, youth and women groups, school children and community at large. Other programmes and activities such as rallies, exhibitions, radio talks, films, road shows etc. have also been conducted to spread awareness on various health issues. The Teen Peer Educators’ Training Programme  is a successful on-going programme and CNI SBHS having trained more than 4000 Teen Peer Educators since 1997. To mark the occasion of the World AIDS Day, The Synodical Board of Health Services, The Church of North India organized awareness programmes on HIV and AIDS through performing arts named “PUKAAR - HAMAARI AAWAAZ” where thousands of people from different NGOS, FBOs and CBOs and school children joined hands together  for a noble cause.
    • Nurturing future leadership in the Healing Ministry- Sponsorship and Scholarship Programme was structured and implemented through which the medical students, nursing students and the allied health sciences students are being sponsored in two Medical Colleges namely Christian Medical College, Vellore and Christian Medical College, Ludhiana and in the Schools of Nursing attached to Mission Hospitals of CNI.  Thousands of grassroot children received Scholarships from CNI SBHS.     
    •  ‘Aastha’ and ‘Arunima’ Community Care Centres  and Hospices for people infected with HIV/AIDS were started at Christian Hospital,  Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh and Diocese of Kolkata, West Bengal respectively;
    • Resources were allocated for the functioning and development of 60 hospitals and 22 Schools of Nursing;
    • Major project (Asha Jyoti,  Asha Kiran, Health and Research projects) is ready for implementation by the approval of Government of India and Donor Agencies which will be implemented in all the hospitals and dioceses including medical colleges and institutes.
